Morning briefing with Matthew Pinsent CBE – Friday 5 July, 2024

All you need to know about the racing today at Henley Royal Regatta with Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE, four-time Olympic gold medallist, Race Umpire and Steward.

RACES TO WATCH

5. 8:50 The Diamond Challenge Sculls 747 S.M. Posnik, POL v 755 O. Zeidler, GER

The three-time winner of this event, Oliver Zeidler, will be aiming to defend his title as he approaches the Olympic Games with one thing in mind: winning gold. One of the few Paris-bound athletes at the Regatta this year, Zeidler will be hoping to make his mark.

15. 9:50 The Ladies’ Challenge Plate 22 Oxford Brookes University v 19 California Rowing Club, USA

Boasting previous dominance in this category for intermediate men’s eights, Oxford Brookes will be looking to demonstrate their rowing prowess over the team from the United States.

16. 10:00 The Temple Challenge Cup 165 Princeton University ‘A’ , USA v 120 A.S.R Nereus ‘B’ , NED

Expect this to be a close-fought battle, with both the Americans and the Dutch doing everything it takes to get their bowball over the line first.

21. 10:30 The Thames Challenge Cup 50 London R.C. ‘A’ v 72 Thames R.C. ‘B’

A tussle between two clubs based only three hundred metres apart on the River Thames.

26. 11:00 The Grand Challenge Cup 4 Rowing Canada, CAN v 3 Princeton & Craftsbury Green, USA

As The Grand Challenge Cup, the title event of the Regatta for international standard men’s eights, gets underway this morning, two development squads from Canada and the USA will face each other in a North American duel.

46. 2:30 The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup 242 Eton College v 271 The Southport School,  AUS

Both of these crews have posted similar times to each other in each of their races so far. Hoping to move on to the Semi-Finals and recommence their winning streak, Eton will have a challenge with The Southport School.

52. 3:05 The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup 263 Shiplake College v 259 Radley College

A local derby, both of these schools made it to the Semi-Finals last year and will be hoping to do the same this year, but only one can go through.

58. 3:40 The Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup 541 Hartpury College v 588 Wycliffe College ‘A’

There has been no programme able to touch Wycliffe in their speed and dominance over the field. After losing out in the Final last year to Tideway Scullers School, Wycliffe will only have one thing on their mind: putting this right.

76. 6:30 The Remenham Challenge Cup 13 Rowing Canada, CAN v 11 Oxford Brookes University

One crew is a national development team, and the other is a university squad of hopeful future internationals. Both will be aiming to establish dominance over the other in the early stages of this race.

81. 7:00 The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup 267 St Paul’s School v 258 Princeton N.R.A. , USA

Princeton has had an outstanding run so far this Regatta, winning both of their heats by over two lengths. Winning this race today will be a greater challenge for Princeton as event favourites St. Paul’s stand in their way.

83. 7:10 The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup 265 St. Edward’s School v 249 King’s College School, Wimbledon

St. Edward’s School, last year’s PE winners, will be hoping to book their spot in the Semi-Final in what looks to be a close match-up with KCS.
