Thanks for your service – Umpires retire

Umpiring at Henley Royal Regatta is an onerous and high profile duty requiring a keen knowledge of the rules, experience of the waters and the ability to maintain control of the race to ensure fair competition. This year two of Henley’s respected course officials called time on their umpire services: George Hammond oversaw the Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup where S. J. Redgrave and S. L. J. Dear won by 3 ½ lengths. Richard Stanhope took the Grand Challenge Cup (Oxford Brookes, easily) and signed off with the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup where Leander won by 1 ½ lengths.
