Q&A with Joanna Miller, Head of Design at Crew Clothing - Official Clothing Partner of Henley Royal Regatta
From fascinators and flapper dresses typical of 1800s England, to the linen and wicker hats of today, Henley Royal Regatta has set the standard for elevated summer style since its inaugural event in 1839. We sat down with the Head of Design at Crew Clothing to hear about the key fashion talking points at this week’s Regatta.
Where did the inspiration for the designs of the Henley Collection come from?
We work closely with Henley Royal Regatta when creating the collection, drawing inspiration from the prestige and heritage of the event. It’s one of the best dressed events in the British sporting calendar, and whether it’s boat tent stripes or the iconic crest, you’ll find references to Henley Royal Regatta throughout the range.
What are your top fashion trend predictions for this year’s Henley Royal Regatta?
We’re predicting lace will be a favourite for ladies. Think something structural, like with our Steering Dress, or ever-popular broderie. For him, linen is definitely having a moment, and we expect to see a lot of it across men’s tailoring at the Regatta. Our Henley Piped Linen Blend Blazer would be a perfect choice.
What timeless classic fashion pieces do you see each year?
Henley Royal Regatta is steeped in tradition, so you can always expect a few mainstays – skirts or dresses below the knee, and classic rowing blazers. Inspired by the rowing clubs and boating tradition, you can also be sure to expect a lot of stripes.
What is the must-have accessory for Guests at Henley Royal Regatta this year?
The espadrille wedge is a great footwear choice for Henley Royal Regatta. Visitors will be walking on grassy riverbanks, so it’s a smarter choice than stiletto heels, and looks effortlessly stylish. We also love our Occasion clutch – it’s the perfect size for storing all your essentials.
As a spectator sport, how does rowing impact Guests’ fashion choices and what might people draw inspiration from?
From wearing your crew colours to taking inspiration from the deep tradition of some of the older rowing clubs, there’s plenty of sporting influence to be seen in the spectator crowds at Henley Royal Regatta. In our exclusive collaboration with Henley Royal Regatta, we’ve included club-style blazers, varsity-inspired details and technical touches to reference the rowing.
