Morning briefing with Grace Prendergast - Thursday, 2 July 2026

Today’s racing highlights at Henley Royal Regatta with Olympic Champion and HRR Steward, Grace Prendergast.

Race 7. 9:30, The Island Challenge Cup. 224 Newcastle University 'A' v 249 University of Washington 'A', USA

Newcastle University have made the final of this event for the past two years and will be looking to do the same again. Standing in their way is a strong University of Washington crew, largely made up of British-born athletes, with plenty of Henley Royal Regatta and international experience in the boat. This should be a brilliant early race, and a real test for both crews.

Race 51. 2:50, The Diamond Challenge Sculls. 840 O. Zeidler, Germany v 810 J.C. Bakker, The Netherlands

The Olympic Champion gets his 2026 Henley Royal Regatta campaign underway. Ollie Zeidler has looked almost untouchable on the international scene this year, so this may be a tough ask for J.C. Bakker, but it’s definitely one to watch if you want to see one of the world’s best come down the track for the first time this Regatta.

Race 77. 6:30, The Ladies' Challenge Plate. 12 Peterhouse, Cambridge v 11 Oxford Brookes University

This is a really interesting one. Peterhouse, Cambridge have stacked the boat with former Olympians, internationals and Cambridge Blues, while Oxford Brookes University have a talented crew of their own, with age-group World Champions, Henley Royal Regatta winners and athletes coming through a strong programme. It’ll be a good test of current form and time spent training together against international pedigree and experience.
